Massage therapy:  The laying on of hands for health purposes.

Massage therapy is used as CAM, (complementary and alternative medicine) for a variety of health-related purposes, from treating specific diseases and conditions to general wellness. Massage therapy may be done to aid circulation, to stimulate nerves, to relax the muscles, or even to move the joints.

How massage therapy could help you:

Massage is used to relieve pain (often from musculoskeletal conditions), but from other conditions as well, provide stimulation that may help block pain signals sent to the brain, rehabilitate sports injuries; reduce stress, increase relaxation, address feelings of anxiety and depression, stimulate the release of certain chemicals in the body, such as serotonin or endorphins. Improve sleep, which has a role in pain, healing, and wellness.

My massage therapy treatments usually last from 1 to 2 hours, depending on clients needs. For some conditions (especially chronic ones), therapists often advise a series of appointments. Therapists try to provide an environment that is calm and soothing, for example: by using dim lighting, soft music, like you are hearing now, and fragrances).

What to expect:

At your first appointment, I will discuss your symptoms, medical history, and the results you (and your health care provider desire, and possibly other factors such as your work and levels of stress. Evaluations of your body is preformed through touch. If I don't find anything that would make a massage inadvisable, I will proceed with the massage.

During treatment, you will lie on a special padded table. I use a professional massage cream called Soma Silk, which helps to reduce friction on the skin. Soma Silk incorporates the healing and skin nutritioning properties of both calendula and jojoba. The therapist may use other aids, such as ice, heat, air fragrances, or stones. He may also provide recommendations for self-care, such as drinking fluids, learning better movement, and developing an awareness of your body. However if this is your first massage, be sure to drink plenty of water prior to, and after your appointment. Why? During the massage, impurities are pushed out of the muscles and cells into your blood stream. You will want to be well hydrated to help flush these impurities out of your body. It is an important part of helping you to feel better.
